Advanced Specialty Coding Virtual Summit: Pain Management

November 16-18, 2026

Boost your coding knowledge and gain information that makes your job easier during the 2026 Advanced Specialty Coding Virtual Summit: Pain Management.

The Pain Management Summit features a selection of sessions that were requested by pain management coders and billers. Specialty-specific sessions will cover a variety of topics including facet joint interventions, joint injections, trigger point injections and the top modifiers reported by pain management practices. Attendees will also get expert tips for showing your private payers who's the boss, discover how to protect your practice from HIPAA violations and learn how to implement the revised requirements for incident-to services in your practice.

You can't afford to miss this summit. Medicare changed the way it calculates payments in 2026, and that reduced the payments you could expect for in-office procedures and lowered payments for services in ambulatory surgery centers, outpatient clinics and other facility settings. For example, the average Medicare Part B payment for a lumbar facet joint RFA (64635) in the facility setting was $186 in 2025. It fell to $173 this year. Payment for a lumbar transforaminal (64483) fell from $107 to $99.

Meanwhile, Medicare administrative contractors continue to crank out tough uniform LCDs for pain management services, while prior authorization requirements keep spreading. In this environment, pain management practices that stick to business as usual, don't defend their revenue or that try to operate with outdated information will struggle to stay in business.

Bonus: Each day ends with a 40-minute session that gives you a chance to ask the day's speakers questions.

Here's what we have in store for you in 2026:

  • Navigate the gray areas of E/M coding.
  • Connect the anatomy and function of the facet joint to facet joint interventions.
  • Help providers eliminate documentation gaps that put their pay for joint injection services at risk.
  • Follow the current rules for drug wastage modifiers (JW and JZ).
  • Make private payer contracts work for your practice, not the other way around.
  • Shield protected health information related to mental health and substance abuse.
  • Know when to issue an advance beneficiary notice of non-coverage for trigger point injection services.
  • Prepare for new coding and regulatory changes that will go into effect in 2027.
  • Extra! Add on a specialtyAnesthesia, Orthopedics, and/or Billing & Compliance – and attend sessions from multiple tracks.

Advanced Specialty Coding Virtual Summit: Pain Management

Virtual Conference Day 1 — Monday, November 16, 2026

*All times are in Eastern Time (EDT).

12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Evaluation & Management – Keep Up With the Requirements for Office Visits
Doris V. Branker, CHC, CPC, CIRCC, CPMA, CPC-I, CANPC, CEMC
Protect your practice's payments for its most frequent services: E/M visits that take place in the office setting (99202-99205 and 99211-99215). This session is designed for pain management practices and will show you how to confirm that each provider’s E/M documentation meets current E/M guidelines, navigate the grey areas of E/M coding and avoid mistakes that can cause improper payments.

12:55 p.m. – 1:40 p.m.
Modifiers – Aim for Accuracy With the Top Pain Management Modifiers
Amber Cantrell, CPC, CPMA, CCMA
Include modifiers in your practice's coding compliance efforts to ensure your claims do capture full revenue and do not generate overpayments. This session will cover the top modifiers reported by pain management practices. You'll learn how to make sure the provider's documentation supports the use of modifiers 25 and 59, follow the current rules for drug wastage modifiers (JW and JZ) and know when you should append a laterality modifier (50 or LT/RT) to a service.

Don't settle for less than all the money your commercial payers owe you. This session will use real-world examples to show you how to put an end to slow claims processing, ignored deadlines, and missed payments. After this session you'll be able to create an effective internal escalation process, make private payer contracts work for your practice and develop and assess the performance of all the steps in the claims cycle.

This session will show you how to back up your facet joint intervention claims with the proper and detailed documentation that meets the tough guidelines that all Medicare administrative contractors require providers to follow. During this session you'll learn how to connect the anatomy and function of the facet joint to facet joint interventions, confirm that physicians accurately document the diagnostic process that supports a diagnostic medial branch block and make sure radiofrequency ablation services are supported by the medial branch blocks.

HIPAA Compliance for the Pain Management Practice
Maya Turner, CPC, CPB, CPMA, CPCO, CRC, CFPC, CPC-I

This session will show you how to locate and fix privacy gaps that even compliance-savvy practices frequently forget. It also will show you how to implement tips that can shield your practice from the latest methods that criminals use to get their hands on PHI and identify the types of problems you can solve in-house so you know when to call in outside help.
